Steps to take at time of death
Depending on where the death occurs and under what circumstances the following will help you when you are in the need of contacting our funeral home.
Anticipated death in the home : Today more people with a terminal illness remain at home under the care of loved ones or Hospice. In this situation you just need to notify Hospice that the Joseph V. Leahy Funeral Home is your choice, they will then take care of all necessary legal requirements. Many times when someone has a terminal illness, their family may elect to make prearrangements with us so that they are not overwhelmed with so many important decisions at the time of death.
Unanticipated Death at home or elsewhere : In these situations, Immediately call 911 . The police will notify the Medical Examiner who will then determine the appropriate steps to be taken. Often, the Medical Examiner can release the human remains directly to the care of the funeral director. However in certain cases, the body may need to remain under the supervision of the Medical Examiner to determine the cause of death.
Death in a Hospital or Nursing Home : When a death occurs in a institution, the medical staff should take care of all necessary legal steps. You will need to notify them that the Joseph V. Leahy Funeral Home will be handling the arrangements and we should be notified Immediately.
