Alicesandra "Sandy" Snyder

On Saturday, May 10th, 2025, Alicesandra "Sandy" Snyder passed away at the age of 83.

Born in 1941 in New York City, Sandy spent her early childhood years living adjacent to Great Smoky Mountains National Park and later childhood on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. She had a Bachelor's degree in Public Policy, a Master's degree in Public Policy and biodiversity, was a Graduate of the Realtors' Institute, and was a former President of the Ulster County Board of Cooperative Extension.

She worked in advertising in New York City at J. Walter Thompson Company and Babcock and Wilcox Engineering during the "Mad Men" era. After moving to Kingston, NY, in 1972, she worked in the medical profession and later as a Realtor and President of Scenic Properties Real Estate. She was the Corporate Compliance Coordinator for Ulster-Greene ARC and an adjunct instructor in Public Policy for Empire State College.

She would later have a story she had written about her childhood on the Lower East Side published in the New York Times. Most notable was her lifelong advocacy for the welfare of animals. She was instrumental in having a young bear transferred to a rehabilitation center in Texas from a concrete floor cage in Forsyth Park in Kingston. She was a founding member of Wolf Haven International and People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals as well as a member of Buffalo Field Campaign, and numerous other organizations. She was present in Yellowstone National Park in 1996 for the second reintroduction of gray wolves. Meeting Dr. Jane Goodall for the first time many years ago, she professed her admiration to Dr. Goodall who said to her, "But my dear, YOU work with wolves!"

Sandy is survived by Patricia Gilchrist, her wife and partner of 48 years, her son Adam Snyder (Jennifer MaHarry) and grandson Elliot, her daughter Jillian Fisher, her granddaughters Abigail Grace and Annabelle and her great grandson Zachary.
