Arthur "Art" Althiser

Friends will be received at the funeral home on Wednesday June 25th from 5 to 7 PM.

A funeral procession will form Thursday 9:30 AM at the funeral home.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10:30 AM at Saint Mary's Church.  Burial will follow in Saint Mary's Cemetery.

Arthur Althiser, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully on June 21, 2025, surrounded by family. A lifelong resident of Kingston, NY, Art was a dedicated public servant and a beloved figure in his community.

Art devoted 45 years of his career to the Ulster County Department of Motor Vehicles, where he became a trusted and familiar face to generations of residents. Known for his encyclopedic knowledge of DMV procedures and his endless patience, Art helped thousands of people navigate their motor vehicle needs with kindness and clarity.

In addition to his work, Art gave back to the community through volunteer work at People's Place, particularly at the farm stand, where he was always ready with a friendly smile and a helping hand.

Art had a deep passion for sports. He coached Kingston JC's to a championship in 1969 and led the Rondout Valley Little League to victory in 1982. He also coached basketball for St. Joseph's, the Moose Lodge, and Kingston's Biddy League and CYO programs, making several finals appearances and winning two State Moose Championships. From 1972 to 1982, he was a sportscaster for WGHQ radio, bringing excitement and insight to local sports coverage.

He was an enthusiastic fan of the New York Nets, Boston Red Sox, New England Patriots, and Boston Bruins, and followed each team with unwavering loyalty.

A lifelong learner, Art read at least two books a week and especially enjoyed history and political biographies. His love of knowledge, sharp memory, and curiosity made him a fascinating and engaging conversationalist. He also had a great appreciation for the theater and the arts.

Above all, Art was a devoted family man. He married the love of his life, Barbara, in October 1982  who he referred to as hid "LB" (Lovely bride), and took pride in his role as a stepfather, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He is survived by his wife Barbara, stepdaughter Rachel, grandchildren Michael Robeson, Jessica Urbine (and her husband Gregory Urbine), and great-granddaughter Hailey Urbine.

Art will be remembered for his integrity, wisdom, compassion, and quiet strength. His legacy lives on in the many lives he touched.
