Dennis Weiss

A brief graveside service will be held on Saturday October 21st at 1:00 PM at Saint Ann's Cemetery. All are welcome.

A celebration of Dennis' life will immediately follow at the Sawkill Firehouse next door, where family and friends will share food and memories.

Dennis M. Weiss, 74, Town Clerk, Town of Kingston died Sunday October 15, 2023 at HealthAlliance Hospital Mary's Avenue Campus. Born February 14, 1949 (Manhattan, N.Y.) son of the late Murray and Ruth (Friedman) Weiss.

Dennis served in the United States Navy from 1971-1976 as a cryptographic machine operator. He retired from the New York State Bridge Authority after over 20 years of service as a state employee at the Rhinecliff Bridge. A longtime public servant, Dennis was known for humbly working behind the scenes, always making sure everything and everyone was taken care of, without ever seeking credit or acknowledgement. Over the past 40 years, he was proud to serve his adopted home of the Town of Kingston in a variety of elected and volunteer roles, including as a Town Councilman, Supervisor, and most recently, Town Clerk. He was also proud to be a Life Member of the Sawkill Volunteer Fire Company, serving as Treasurer and then President for many years. One of his greatest joys was ensuring that each child in Sawkill had the best summer of their lives. In the 1990s, he focused on growing the Summer Rec. program, including establishing the area's first ADA accessible wooden playground, a Thursday evening 'Dennyball' all-hands-on-deck softball game, and the famous end-of-the-summer ice cream party.

He held leadership roles in a wide variety of volunteer boards and committees, ranging from softball coach, umpire, and league president at the Town of Ulster Little League, to founder and captain of the Bridge Over Troubled Water team at the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life, to the director and stagehand for countless school talent shows and Christmas pageants. Most recently, he enjoyed serving for over ten years as a volunteer at Bethel Woods, returning to the infamous grounds where he could relive the best concert of his life.

There is no doubt that his greatest and proudest roles were that of husband, father, and grandfather. He is survived by his beloved wife of 45 years, Eileen, his daughters Laurie (Aaron "Randy" Berrios), Tara (Jon Bocketti), and Megan (Kevin Rowe), and his grandchildren, Victoria, Caleb, Logan, Stella, and Dominic.

In lieu of flowers, please consider making a memorial contribution to the Sawkill Volunteer Fire Company or Bethel Woods Center for the Arts, and most importantly, perform a mitzvah whenever possible.
