Edward Sturm, 82, of Port Ewen, passed away on Thursday, October 15, 2026, at HealthAlliance Hospital: Mary’s Avenue Campus in Kingston. Born June 15, 1944, in Brooklyn, he was the son of the late Edward H. Sturm and Rita A. Herzog.
Ed proudly served in the United States Air Force from 1965 to 1967, performing with the Drum and Bugle Corps for the Falcons football team at Falcon Stadium. A dedicated trumpeter throughout his life, he played with the Farmingville civilian drum corps and continued his musical service while stationed at the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
Following his military service, Ed spent 30 years with the U.S. National Park Service as an exhibit specialist, working out of the National Park Service Building Preservation Laboratory in Boston, Massachusetts. His carpentry expertise and project‑management skill contributed to the preservation and restoration of numerous historic structures throughout the Northeast. His work included the restoration of the William Floyd Estate—home of the first New York delegate to sign the Declaration of Independence—as well as major projects at Montauk Lighthouse, Fire Island National Seashore, the Franklin D. Roosevelt Home, the Eleanor Roosevelt Estate, the Vanderbilt Mansion and estate grounds, and the Martin Van Buren National Historic Site. He also contributed to restoration efforts at the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, and the Thomas Edison National Historical Park.
An avid outdoorsman, Ed enjoyed hunting and fishing throughout his life. He especially loved camping, spending more than forty years camping, with 25 years spent at Nickerson Campground, where he formed lasting friendships and cherished memories with many of people.
Ed is survived by his son, Edward Sturm III, and his grandson, Edward B. Sturm IV. Both of Kingston NY.
