Edward Peter Surowitz

Edward Peter Surowitz, 79 of Woodstock, N.Y died at home on August 19, 2023 following a long illness. Ed was born on May 2, 1944 in Brooklyn, N.Y and attended Erasmus High School.

Ed had many talents. His musical ability was discovered at an early age and he was largely a self-taught piano player who performed at local clubs. After spending some time in California working as a photographer for news services, he settled in Ulster County. He worked at various music stores until 1984 when he opened Allegro Music in Kingston which he owned and operated for 25 years until his retirement. At Allegro Ed loved even more than sales, chatting with local musicians and mentoring young people. The store was a favorite gathering spot for musicians and music students.

In addition to music Ed's hobbies included photography, basketball, tai chi and flying. He earned a private pilot's license. On October 6, 1996 at Williams Lake Hotel Ed married Barbara Kleckner. Together they shared many adventures, especially trips in his Cessna 182 and in recent years wintering in Palm Desert, CA.

Ed is survived by his wife, Barbara, brother, David of Plantation, Florida, brother-in-law Steven Wax and sister-in-law Kathleen Haley.  Musicians, former customers and friends will remember Ed for his story telling, his wit and his cheerful demeanor.
