George J. Habernig, Jr.

Friends will be received at the funeral home on Friday December 27th from 3-7 PM.

A funeral procession will form on Saturday December 28th at 9 AM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10 AM St. Joseph Church in Kingston.

Burial with military honors will follow at St. Thomas of Canterbury Cemetery in Cornwall.

George J. Habernig, Jr., 105, died Wednesday December 18, 2024 at ArchCare at Ferncliff in Rhinebeck. He was born June 1, 1919 in Newburgh, the son of the late George J. Habernig, Sr. and Ellen (Cassidy) Habernig.

George served our country in the United States Army during World War II, and received the American Service Medal, Asiatic Pacific Service Medal, Bronze Star Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Philippines Liberation Ribbon and World War II Victory Medal. He returned home and was employed by the Social Security Administration as a district manager for thirty six years, splitting his time between Newburgh and Kingston. A former member of the Knights of Columbus in Newburgh, he was also active in the Boy Scouts of America. Devoted to his church community, George was a parishioner of St. Joseph's Church in Kingston where he also served on the school's PTA. He was a member of the Divine Mercy Perpetual Adoration Chapel in Kingston. George also was involved in the Ulster County Office for the Aging, and spent time volunteering to assist senior citizens. George loved being with family and sharing his sense of humor with them. He was proud to dress as Santa every year during the Christmas season for his family, even up until age 104!

Surviving are his children, Michael Habernig and his wife Elaine of Kingston, James P. Habernig and his wife Carla of Port Ewen, Thomas Habernig of Kingston, Timothy Habernig and his wife Lori of Latham, MaryAnn Mucia and her husband David of Papillion, Nebraska. Twenty one grandchildren and 34 great grandchildren, a sister Catherine Franchini as well as many nieces and nephews also survive.

In addition to his parents, George is predeceased by his wife Ann Habernig, a son George J. Habernig, III and his wife Kathleen, two sisters Frances Chiaramonte and Elizabeth Schneegass.

Expressions of sympathy may be made in the form of contributions to either St. Joseph's Church or Hudson Valley Hospice in George's name.
