A graveside service with military honors will be held at Wiltwyck Cemetery in Kingston, New York, on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, at 11:00 a.m.

**James R. Cahill, 78, of Hurley, New York, passed away peacefully at home on October 1, 2026.**

James was born on February 7, 1948, in the Bronx, New York, to the late Michael and Mary Alice (Greene) Cahill. He spent his early years in the Bronx before his family relocated to Kingston in 1955.

James proudly served his country as a Vietnam veteran. He served with Alpha Troop, 1st Platoon, of the 3/4 Cavalry, 25th Infantry Division, one of the most decorated units in the United States Army. During his service, he received numerous unit commendations and attained the rank of Sergeant (E-5). He was awarded both the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart for his service and sacrifice.

James and his wife, Karen (Benicase) Cahill shared nearly 45 years of marriage filled with good times, laughter, family, and countless cherished memories. James was a loving father to his sons, Joseph Cahill and his wife Laura, and Ryan Cahill and his wife Jaclyn.

Nothing brought James more joy than his grandchildren, Jack, Olivia, Isabel, and Ryan Jr., who lovingly knew him as Papa. He was adored by his grandchildren and deeply respected and cherished by his sons. He took great pride in his family, the life they built together, and treasured the time he spent with them.

James was a caring and generous person. He was someone people looked up to and knew they could rely on for anything, large or small. His sense of humor, kindness, and willingness to help were just a few of the qualities that made him so special to the people who knew him.

James was predeceased by his parents, Michael and Mary Alice (Greene) Cahill, and his brothers, Dennis Cahill and Christopher Cahill.James is survived by his wife Karen, sons Joseph and wife Laura, Ryan and wife Jaclyn, and grandchildren Jack, Olivia, Isabel, and Ryan Jr. He is also survived by his siblings Donna Cahill Castle and her husband Jim, Kevin Cahill, Elisabeth Cahill and her husband Donny Timbrouck, Brian Cahill and his wife Debra, Terry Cahill and his wife Tammy, Michael Cahill and his partner Debrah Jennings, Patrick Cahill and his wife Jill, sister-in-law Ann Cahill, Aunt Janet Van Kleek, along with many nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws, and dear friends.

James will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing and loving him. Though he is no longer with us, he will always remain a part of our lives and in our hearts. The times we shared, the stories we tell, and the laughter he brought into our lives will stay with us forever. We will carry his love with us always, and the memories of James will continue to bring smiles to our faces and joy to our hearts for years to come.
