Rhoda Horowitz

Rhoda Horowitz passed away at Woodland Pond, her beloved community and home, on the morning of August 13, 2025. She was 99.

Born Rhoda Klein on May 2, 1926 to Rose and Joseph, she grew up in the Ashkenazi Jewish community of New York City and Bridgeport, Connecticut. Listening to her parents speak Yiddish in the house growing up led to a lifelong love of hearing the language spoken and sung. She was a bright and determined student; after a long illness at age 16, she worked hard to catch up in every class and graduated high school on time with her peers. Rhoda had a long and varied work-life, from a bakery counter to operating a comptometer to conducting consumer research and eventually going back to school in middle age and making a successful career as a nuclear medicine technologist.

During the War, Rhoda corresponded with several servicemen, as was the custom for young women back home. She ultimately married one of them, Robert "Bob" Horowitz (z''l), and they had a long and happy marriage as their family grew to include Jeffrey, Alan (z''l) and Sherry. The family settled in Yonkers, NY, and Rhoda lived in that house for 63 years. She was besotted with Bob from the moment she met him to the very end. Rhoda is survived by children Jeffrey (Michelle) and Sherry (Stuart (z''l)), grandchildren Andrew, Aviva and Shira (Kit), and great-grandson Dante.

Rhoda lived life with an enviable sense of joy and acceptance that charmed most everyone she met. She told wonderful stories that brought to life the many changing times she lived through, she had an impish sense of humor, and she loved to welcome new people into her heart, to play Rummikub with them and to feed them ice cream. She truly enjoyed her later years, often saying that the 14 years she spent at Woodland Pond were among the best times of her life. That joy brought lightness to her family and her community, and she will be missed so dearly.

Rhoda was buried in the natural section of Rosendale Cemetery in a beautiful spot in the woods with immediate family present.
