A memorial service will be held Thursday 11 AM at the funeral home.
Richard A. Metzger Sr., 85, of the Town of Ulster died Thursday June 15, 2023 at Golden Hill Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Kingston. Born November 25,1937 in Poughkeepsie, he is the son of the late George and Anna Metzger.
Mr. Metzger served our country in the United States Navy during the Vietnam Era. He worked for IBM as an Electrical Engineer, retiring in 1988. He was a member of the Redeemer Lutheran Church for fifty one years, formerly serving as treasurer as well as a member of the Men's Breakfast at the Church. He was a lifetime member of the NRA, a member of the American Legion Post 1748-Lake Katrine, the Ulster Kiwanis Club, and Northeastern Woodworkers Association. Active in local affairs, Mr. Metzger was a member of the Town of Ulster Republican Committee for over forty years, worked for the Board of Elections for a number of years, and served as the harbor master at the Charles Rider Park boat launch. His greatest joy was playing Santa for many years in the Hudson Valley Mall and for Ulster Hose Co. 5 during their annual Christmas Cheer event and at the Hudson Valley Mall.
Mr. Metzger was extremely active and supportive of the Boy Scouts of America. He was the pack master of Cub Scout Pack 10-Lake Katrine, Troop Master for Sawkill Troop 8 and he was the firearm safety instructor at Camp Tri-Mount. He was a member of The Order of the Arrow Half Moon Lodge, where he completed many camping and canoeing trips. He completed Wood Badge Training, and was affectionately known as "Mr. Bear" for his years in scouting.
Surviving is his wife Patricia Metzger, children Carolyn Woods, Thomas Metzger and his wife Carrie, and Richard Metzger Jr. and his wife Kimberly. Grandchildren Riley and Brady Metzger, Patrick and McKenzie Woods.
Expressions of sympathy in lieu of flowers may be made in the form of contributions to Redeemer Lutheran Church Capital Improvement Fund-103 Wurts Street Kingston, NY 12401.
