Roger Pierre Blatter, 91 of West Hurley passed away Thursday July 11 at his home surrounded by his family. Born in Old Westbury, he was the son of the late John Francis Blatter and Marguerite Pfau.
Husband, Father, Grandfather, Uncle, Friend are just a few titles to describe Roger.
He was a lifelong public servant, stationed in the US Army during the Korean War. He was a New York State Forest Ranger for 38 years in Catskills and Hudson Valley. Roger could look at any plant or tree and tell you what it was.
A dedicated family man, Roger was married to the love of his life, Betty who he met in Kingston. They spent the next nearly 70 years devoted to one another and their family.
They loved spending time at their home in New Port Richey, Florida during the winter months where they enjoyed relaxing with their friends. Roger took care of Betty until she passed away in 2021.
Never one to shy away from working, Roger started a business following his retirement. He spent many years running the family business with his son, Jim Blatter and grandson Ryan.
Roger deeply cared for his community and had deep seeded roots in West Hurley. He was an active member of the Lions Club and served as the past President along with his late wife Betty.
He was a Charter Member for the West Hurley Fire Department established in 1952 until the end of his life. During his lengthy tenure, he was the Chairman of the Board of Fire Commissioners on several different occasions.
Roger was a member of the American Legion of Woodstock Post 1026 for most of his adult life and had served as past Commander during that time.
Reliable, trustworthy, knowledgeable, fiercely loyal, and hardworking are words to describe Roger. He could always be counted on for a well timed witty joke up right until the very end. Roger maximized every opportunity during his 91 years while upholding his values and leading a principled life. He will be sorely missed by his family and friends.
Surviving are his son James R. Blatter (Linda Metcalf), Grandchildren Ryan Blatter (Leah Gooch), Meagan Blatter-Winokur and her husband Michael, Conor Erin Blatter, brother Edouard Blatter and his wife Doris and his sister Suzzane Blatter. His wife Elizabeth "Betty" Blatter predeceased him along with his brother Alfred.
