Thomas Lown

Thomas Lown, 87 of Rhinebeck, NY passed on March 18, 2024 lovingly surrounded at his home by his wife Lynn, daughter Ellen and his beloved Jack Russell Terriers Jake and Levi. Tom, as most knew him, died after bravely fighting Alzheimer's for multiple years. He was the son of Raymond and Elizabeth Lown. He was one of 6 children.

For many years he co-operated the successful and award winning Lown Brothers Dairy Farm and Apple Orchards. In 1980 he sold the majority of the farm and together with Lynn built their home that she designed on the property he retained. Tom and Lynn were deemed by the Rhinebeck Historical Society to be owners of the longest continuously owned property in Dutchess County and Tom had direct bloodline ties that dated back to 1715 on the property which were during the earliest founding days of Rhinebeck. After he retired from farming he became a heavy machine operator and did that for over 30 years.

During his post-farming days his passions were John Deere tractors, his landscaping and gardening. Some would say visiting Tom's and Lynn's home was like going to a botanical garden. With his wife he was a member of the Poughkeepsie Yacht Club for over 20 years, a member of Brits on the Hudson and a long time member of the Neighbors Gun Club.

Tom loved watching his dogs play and being with his devoted wife. All of their friends, family and anyone that met him would share how kind and patient he was as well as him being a gentle soul. Throughout their 50 years together Tom was a protective, generous and supportive husband and father. Even in his last hours of lucidity he expressed a strong desire to be there for his wife and daughter and to take care of them. Lynn and Ellen are grateful to the Hudson Valley Hospice for their support and compassionate care for Tom.

Later this year, in lieu of a service, Lynn and Ellen will be having a private celebration of life.
