Wayne Schmitt passed away surrounded by family on November 22, 2024, at Vassar Hospital after a brief illness. Wayne was the son of the late Melvin Schmitt and Dora Wager. Growing up, Wayne spent most of his free time with his extended family on their dairy farm in Catskill. A born and bred Saugertisian, Wayne graduated from Saugerties High in 1970 and continued his education at Ulster County Community College. It was there were he met the love of his life Kathleen Jordan. His humor and easygoing demeanor won her over instantly. They were married on August 4, 1973.
Wayne's career in the automobile business spanned over 52 years. He started out washing cars working at Sawyer Motors at age 15. After completing automotive training through BOCES, he worked as a mechanic at Sawyer Motors for years before moving over to the service department. He was a dedicated employee who enjoyed interacting with his customers.
Kathy and Wayne welcomed their only child Kelly Schmitt in July of 1984. Wayne was the ultimate family man and was a protective caregiver to his parents and wife when she fell ill. Kathy passed away in July of 2021. Wayne enjoyed many different hobbies. He was a vintage car enthusiast and felt happiest when he was outside in nature. Wayne collected local history books and loved sharing "fun facts" with others. Wayne's life was forever brightened by the birth of his granddaughter Grace Elizabeth. He was fortunate to spend every day with his little buddy. Grace brought him so much joy and extended his quality of life. Surviving family members include his daughter Kelly Schmitt Santella, her husband Bill, granddaughter Grace Elizabeth, and golden retriever pup Archie. Several cousins also survive.
In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to his granddaughter's school Kingston Catholic .
